Cretan Costume
Cretan costume is one of the most important elements of Cretan folklore.

The Cretan traditional costume that we know today, is rarely worn on a daily basis but in many celebrations and official events we will see men and women dressed in the varied woven and embroidered costume that was established after the 16th century.

MEN'S COSTUME
The men's traditional costume is common for the whole island and was distinguished in two variations.

One was the casual casual suit consisting of the linen black breeches (found throughout the Aegean), the shirt, the "meitanogeleko" and a long belt that is often wrapped around the waist.
This outfit was completed with the black leather "stivania" (a kind of high boot) and the percussion scarf on the head.

Nowadays this traditional costume has been replaced with a very simplified form that is still worn mainly by the elderly in the mountain villages and consists of the black or khaki "gylotta", black shirt, black stilettos and the well-known percussion scarf.

The official variant of the men's costume, the so-called "salwar kameez", is made entirely of good quality blue felt. It consisted of the multi-faceted breeches, the meitanogeleko which was decorated with rich embroidery, the embroidered silk shirt, the long crimson silk belt and the "stivania" which, unlike the everyday ones, were white.
This costume was completed by the necessary percussion scarf and the chain that hung from the neck and was joined with the knife that passed through their waist below the belt.

In many cases they wore a felt cape, with a silk lining and rich embroidery and the necessary hood for the cold.

The handmade panties are part of the traditional Cretan clothing which replaced the breeches after the First World War. This costume was worn during the period of the National Resistance against the Cretan State.
